Dorothy LaVelle Davis, a Memphis native and longtime McMinnville resident, died on July 2, 2025 at Bailey Manor in Manchester, Tennessee.
Dorothy (Dot) was born on August 20, 1930. She grew up in Memphis, Tennessee and graduated from Humes High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society.
She once said that if she had not married a handsome young Texan (Bill Davis) upon graduating high school, she would have attended Southwestern at Memphis and majored in social work.
She was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, aunt, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, a great cook and homemaker and an office manager and frame consultant for her husband’s optometric practice. But above all she became that social worker – she prepared meals, helped and advised others financially and listened empathetically, always offering sound counsel and guidance.
A former member of Westwood Church of Christ where she kept the nursery, taught Wednesday night Bible class to second graders, washed glass communion cups and furnished flowers for the Sunday morning pulpit, she was a member of the Christian faith.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Hermon and Robbie LaVelle, husband William W. Davis, sister and brother-in-law Helen and H.E. Douglas, brother and sister-in-law Herman and Jewell LaVelle. She is survived by her son Glenn Davis (Lynn), grandsons Will Davis (Molly), Bob Davis (Ben Dunning) and great grandsons Noel, Lee and Lucas, several nieces and nephews and many friends.
The family would like to thank everyone at Bailey Manor Manchester and Gentiva Hospice for their loving care.
