Joyce Ann Greene Pirtle, 89, died December 20, 2023 following an extended illness.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, December 23, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Westwood Church of Christ with James Vandiver officiating. Burial will be at Whorton Springs Cemetery in Dekalb County. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. at Westwood Church of Christ. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
A daughter of the late George and Rachel Greene, Mrs. Pirtle was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Edwin Pirtle; a son, Mark A. Pirtle; brothers, Alton (Louise), Johnny (Daphne), G.B. and Ken Greene; sisters, Wilma (Marion) Pistole, Hannah (Rayford) Davis and Melba (Jimmy) Griffith; granddaughter, Amber Pirtle; brother-in-law, Mike Worzek; mother-in-law, Alice Pirtle; sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen and Eudeen Webb and Sue and Charles Roberts and sister-in-law, Jean Pirtle.
She is survived by sons, Mike (Sharon), Tim (Mary) and Jack (Margie); daughter, Joy (Mike) James and daughter-in-law, Anita Pirtle. Also surviving are sisters, Linda (Jerry) Davenport, Kay Worzek; brother, Fred (Faye) Greene; sisters-in-law, Suzi Greene and Janice (Gary) Bryant and brother-in-law, Lonnie “Junior” Pirtle.
Also surviving are grandchildren, John David and Bevin Pirtle, Michael Pirtle, Tamsyn Beach and Alex Pirtle, Graham Pirtle, Hugh and Sam James, Maggie Bishop and Jamie Rice, Bo Martindale and Wade Slatton.
Also surviving are 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mrs. Pirtle was a loyal and active member of Westwood Church of Christ for more than six decades.
She greatly valued and fostered family ties, serving as one of the main organizers in her large family’s frequent gathering and a willing and dedicated caregiver to members suffering health or other issues.
In her younger years she loved lake life, including sunbathing, waterskiing and camping. Later she enjoyed snow skiing and travel.
She worked at Genesco Shoe, Sears and many years at McMinnville Electric.
She was heavily involved in her community, notably with the Business and Professional Women’s organization who named her Business Woman of the Year. She was also a member of the Barber Sharps and the Red Hat Society.
Donations may be made to Westwood Church of Christ or Special Kids (2132 East Main Street, Murfreesboro, TN 37130), a Christian-based organization in Murfreesboro that serves children with special needs, such as autism.
