Lynder Armstead Holmes

March 17, 1922 — February 21, 2023

McMinnville, TN resident, Lynder Armstead Holmes, age 100, was born March 17, 1922 and died February 21, 2023 at St. Thomas River Park Hospital in McMinnville.

Mr. Holmes was a World War II veteran, member of General George Patton’s Third Army and heavy machine gunner in the 808 Tank Destroyer Battalion.  Mr. Holmes fought in the European Theatre, the Battle of the Bulge and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a retired machine operator, member of Bybee Branch Church of Christ and son of the late Jesse Newton and Della Duncan Holmes.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Eva (Jim) Elder, Cora (Urban) Simmons, Elan (Loyal) Hill, Avice (Doc) Colwell and brothers, J.D. (Mabel) Holmes, Hubert (Jean) Holmes, Herman (Pauline) Holmes and Vernon Holmes.

Mr. Holmes is survived by wife of 75 years, Willie Holmes; son, David (Kim) Holmes of McMinnville, TN; granddaughters, Aaren Holmes of Nashville, TN and Merranda (Hunter) Stanfield and great-granddaughter due in June of Nashville, TN; sister in-law, Naomi Holmes of Manchester, TN and numerous nieces and nephews and special caregivers, Tammie Gutierrez, Katie Wells, Shelby Wood, Audrey Lockwood, Sheila Davidson, Lisa Thomas, Toni Scott, Brooke Hailey and Tracey Terry also survive, all of whom made it possible for Mr. Holmes to remain in his home up until his brief illness and death.

Graveside service and interment will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, February 24th at Shady Grove Cemetery in Coffee County, TN with Brother Charles Williams officiating.  Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. until time of service at the cemetery.

Full military honors will be administered by American Legion Post 173 and VFW Post 5064.
